Seasonal Storage Means Keep It Closed Most awning frame damage comes from some kind of stress, either high winds or gusts which twist the frame or weight from heavy rain, snow, even lots and lots of leaves, which can distend the fabric and bend the frame. It is not necessary to take down a retractable awning to protect it in winter. Just close it. Many retractable awnings have an optional hood, a shield which covers the awning when it is retracted and offers additional protection for the fabric. In winter, it can also be helpful to remove the valance, the strip of fabric which hangs at the front of the awning. What Makes the Difference Retractable awnings are much easier to maintain than fixed awnings or canopies for two major reasons: the fact that the awning retracts and the materials that make it.
How much shade coverage is required. What the width of the awning should be, based on the shade area. Add at least 12 inches to maximize coverage for sun and rain protection. How far out the awning extends (the projection), based on the shade area. There is a natural slope to an awning, so the actual shade is several inches shorter than the full projection. How high to mount the awning. Because of the awnings slope, the front of the awning is lower than the mounting position; this difference is the drop. The recommended drop is 3 inches per foot of projection. So, if the awning has a 12-foot projection, the drop is about 36 inches. To get a 7-foot clearance under the front bar, the awning has to be mounted at least 10 feet high. Scout out a mounting place that is free of obstructions (no lights, gutters, wiring, or ornamentation) and has adequate clearance around any doors or windows. For screens, make sure that any doors swing away from the screen. For retractable awnings, make sure the awning can extend its full projection without running into a tree, patio, roofline, or fence.
There are also dozens of different accessories for retractable awnings which make them easier to operate. A couple of common ones: Anemometer - a device which monitors wind speed; this is used with wind sensors. Sensors - devices which monitor different atmospheric conditions and trigger the motor to retract or extend the awning accordingly; there are four major kinds of sensors, including sun (light) sensors, wind sensors, rain sensors, and motion sensors (which monitor movements, such as wind gusts) Motor - a device which automatically moves the awning; motors are enclosed in the roller tube.Terms: Materials The retractable awning materials are the true indicator of quality - because the kind of materials used translates into quality, not the expense of the materials. Awnings have been common for more than 2000 years; retractable awnings have been around for almost 150 years. While the history of using awnings stretches far back in Europe and retractable awnings are commonly used there today, theyre rare in the United States - despite the fact that retractable awnings were invented in the US. This uneven adoption has led to an exposure of design options in Europe - intricate frames, new types of retractable frames, bold colors, and luscious patterns - while America, treating awnings as a practical afterthought, has stayed more conservative. A Quick History Some form of awnings has been around for millennia, starting in Egypt and the Middle East and spreading across the Roman Empire. Most of those were fixed canopies of mats, skins, or fabric bolts hung over poles. In the mid-1800s, shop owners began using movable awnings, which simply bunched up the fabric when it was taken down. In the latter part of the century, they began rolling awnings on a tube, cleanly retracting them and keeping the fabric safe. With minor variation, this is the same basic design used today on lateral arm retractable awnings.
Why is the awning being used? Figure out clearly why that area needs protection and what element you want to control. The requirements for the awning are different for rain protection and sun protection. For example, to use the awning in wet areas, have at least a 3 inch slope, or pitch, to the awning per foot of extension. If an awning extends 12 feet, the pitch should be 36 inches, meaning that the awning must be mounted 3 feet higher than the height at the end of the awning fully extended. Awnings in sunny locations with little can be nearly flat. For other situations, awnings may not be ideal; high, sustained winds can seriously damage awnings, as can the weight from snow, ice, and hail. Accessories like wind or motion sensors can also be used to protect the retractable awning in less than ideal conditions.
A drop screen usually enhances an existing structural feature, such as a door or window, or as panels to enclose a porch, lanai, or gazebo. A drop screen requires a sturdy beam to mount to and possibly a door frame or post to fix the side guides to. After finding the location, simply measure the width of the area from side to side on the interior of the frame (for an inside mount) and add for the width of the side guides if mounted outside the window frame. Then measure the height of the screen, going from the inside (or bottom) of the top frame to the bottom of the threshold for the height; for an outside mount, add the size of the headerbox and bottom rail to the height measurement. Finding an ideal retractable awning location has a few other factors to consider.
